October 12, 1998 may be a long way off, but there is a group of high-powered New Jersey and New York business and government officials already setting their sights on Columbus Day – when civilization’s most famous navigator will join Lady Liberty in the harbor spotlight. The Christopher Columbus Monument Committee (CCMC) today announced plans to unveil a dramatic 6-story, sail shaped, bronze monument in Liberty State Park in Jersey City as a tribute to Columbus, and to serve as a constant reminder of the significant role New Jersey and New York City played in the nations immigration history. The spectacular monument will be erected permanently in the park, across from Liberty and Ellis Islands on the weekend leading to the national holiday honoring Columbus.
